Appearance
Deep-bodied, silvery-gray to bluish-gray fish with a prominent arched humpback and a rounded tail. Features a long dorsal fin divided into two sections and a down-turned mouth.
Size Range
Typically 10-20 inches and 1-5 lbs, but can reach over 30 inches and 30 lbs.
Primary Habitat
Large rivers, reservoirs, and lakes with silty or sandy bottoms. Prefers clear water but is highly tolerant of turbid conditions.
Feeding Habits
Benthic invertebrates, crayfish, insect larvae (mayflies), snails, and clams. Notable for consuming invasive zebra mussels using powerful pharyngeal teeth.
